Weed Programs - (Continued from page )

budget will become a huge cost down the line. Why these programs were hit harder than other programs is not clear, but presumably they are considered to not have strong enough constituencies. Let's prove them wrong. While the first round of cuts to CDFA's weed programs happened with no opportunity for public comment, this round is different. The budget committees of the Senate and Assembly will now begin reviewing the draft budget, and we can voice our support for programs on the chopping block. We have two key targets: the Budget Subcommittees on Natural Resources in the Assembly and the Senate. These subcommittees will make recommendations on the part of the budget concerning the CDFA weed programs. Please write:

GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT -chapter conservation issues. She has been a dedicated participant in the Western Riverside multiple species planning process. Our rare plant co-coordinators, Fred Roberts and Ian Gillespie, continue to make important contributions to this effort. They provide local rare plant information to local members and the state office. Fred helps us to know our local rare plants with articles in the newsletter. Ian is also our chapter webmaster and keeps a beautiful array of photos available to you on our website.

We are also thrilled to have the help from our chapter contact person, Sheila McMahon. If you have a question about a chapter event, program, or field trip give Sheila a call.  And we are delighted to have the enthusiastic energy and support from Diana Ruiz who is now serving as our public relations and media coordinator. Diana has also been the gracious host of our meetings at the Riverside Resource Conservation District. Welcome!

We still need your help. Consider joining us as a committee chair. The time commitment is not large and the rewards are huge. Field trips? School Gardens? Invasive Exotic Plants? Plant Sale (we now have a committee planning our first plant sale)? Let me know how you’d like to help. - Katie Barrows
