Wildfires may be devastating for humans, but in coastal sage scrub habitat they are usually beneficial, provided they are not too hot to kill shrubs and cause a type-conversion of shrubland to grassland.  Last October, the Mountain Fire burned over 2000 acres of the southeastern portion of Reserve.  The fire was not as hot as we feared, many shrubs remain intact in the burn area and new growth is apparent everywhere.  If current precipitation patterns continue through the winter, spring should prove to be a spectacular wildflower season with the combination of growth from last years’ wildflowers and dormant fire-followers blooming together.

On Saturday, March 27th, CNPS members and their guests are invited to attend a special morning hike and/or an indoor afternoon program about wildflowers and wildfires at the Reserve. Please note that because group size is limited, pre-registration is required for the hike.  Call the Interpretive Center at (909) 926-4119 for hike registration.  Reservations are not required for those wishing to attend the afternoon program at the center.

The hike will be held from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Meet at the Alamos Schoolhouse & Multi-Species Reserve Interpretive Center.  This is a guided hike and starts promptly at 9:00 AM.  Depending on the group, the distance we travel may be approximately 3 to 5 miles, with some hilly terrain. Please note that facilities are not available during the hike. Participants should bring water and other field supplies including weather and trail appropriate clothing. Group size is limited for the hike, therefore pre-registration is required.

For those armchair adventurers who do not wish to attend the hike, a special indoor program about Wildflowers and Wildfires will also be held on Saturday, March 27th at 2:00 PM at the Alamos Schoolhouse & Multi-Species Reserve Interpretive Center.  Reservations or pre-registration are not required for the afternoon program.

The Alamos Schoolhouse & Multi-Species Reserve Interpretive Center is at Lake Skinner Regional Park, 37701 Warren Road near Temecula. Although the hike and program are free, there is a $2 per person day-use entry fee at Lake Skinner Recreation Area. Call Anthony Mann for information at the numbers above.
