Spend the day outdoors and help us spread the word about CNPS. There are lots of new attractions this year at the Expo, including a Farmer’s Market, Food Court, and Learning Activities, and CNPS will be there, in the outdoor exhibit area (bring your hat!) This year we will be able to provide our posters, plants and other materials!

High? Desert Trip for Wildflowers

Meet at BLM Palm Springs Office We will have to scout some areas before the trip to see best bloom, so can’t tell you exactly where we will be going, but we think mostly east Mojave Desert. Moderate walking. Bring lunch, water, sun protection. See the meeting notice on page 9 for instructions to  the BLM office in Palm Springs.

Algodones Dunes Spring Trek

 

April 16-18, 2004 

 

Cross the southern Algodones Dunes, a citizens proposed wilderness area (near Yuma AZ / El Centro CA.) Currently protected from ORVs, but at risk of Bush rollback. This is an epic desert journey, and not that hard.  We’ll spend one night in the deep wild dunes.  Contact me if you want to be a part of this great adventure.

CNPS Spring 2004 Desert Field Trip

 

April 23-25

Vegetation Survey: Ileene Anderson, CNPS So Cal Regional Botanist

 

CNPS members are invited to attend a field trip on April 23-25 at Joshua Tree National Park. We will be camping at the Lost Horse Campground, reserved especially for our group. The Friday morning agenda is optional, so it is OK to arrive late Friday afternoon or evening or to arrive Saturday morning by 9am. The campground has a pit toilet but no water and limited parking, so RSVP soon to get a spot. Some dirt road driving (4-wd not required).

 

The agenda will be

Friday, April 23, 8:00 am meet at Big Morongo Wildlife Preserve for bird watching and nature walk. At around noon we will leave Big Morongo and drive into Joshua Tree NP as a caravan, stopping along the way if there are flowers, and then on to Lost Horse Campground to set up camp. Friday afternoon around 3pm we will drive a short distance to the vicinity of the following day's sampling project where we will identify plants and get ready for the next day's vegetation surveys. Friday night will include a night hike.

 

Saturday, April 24. At 9:00 am sharp, drive to nearby site where we will perform vegetation surveys using the modified Whittaker plot technique to replicate previous surveys done for the "Vertical Vegetation" project. Will eat lunch at sampling site. Meeting around the campfire in the evening.

 

Sunday, April 25. Drive south to Cottonwood Springs with stops on the way at various places and visit "Native Canyon". Go home.
