November 6, 2004Native Arrow Making Saturday, November 6, 9 am to 5 pm. Learn how the Serrano as well as other California Indians, who inhabited Joshua Tree National Park, made traditional Carrizo Cane arrows. Many Native California skills will be taught in the manufacture of these high-speed arrows.

November 7, 2004Queen Mountain: A View from the Top Explore a desert wilderness and summit a 5687’ elevation mountain with an expert guide.  Enjoy the spectacular views while learning about nature and the ecology of Joshua Tree National Park. The Hiking Level is rated as Strenuous.

November 13, 2004Native American Plant Cordage Learn the skill of making cordage from native materials of Southern California.  After making the cordage, the class will be taught how to make nets which played an important role in the day-to-day life of Native Americans.

November 14, 2004Basic Desert SurvivalThrough hands-on “survival scenarios”, participants gain comprehensive survival information, including numerous skills such as matchless fire making, emergency shelter construction, and making survival kits.

November 19, 20, 21, 2004Geology: Creation of the Joshua Tree LandscapeExplore topics such as plate tectonics; faults; weathering and erosion; unique landforms of the desert landscape and the effect of changing climate through the ages at Joshua Tree National Park with D. D. Trent, Ph.D.

November 20, 21, 2004Edible Plants of the DesertLearn how the native peoples of the Mohave and Colorado Deserts found food in such a seemingly barren landscape.  You will prepare a feast of native foods using traditional tools and techniques.
