California Manzanitas - Code: W05BOT102 Manzanitas (Arctostaphylos spp.) identify key characteristics that distinguish the many Southern
California manzanita species from examine fresh plant material and herbarium
specimens, and see the many manzanita species that are displayed in the

and Booksigning - Code: W05BOT103. The beautiful new California Desert Wildflowers: An
Introduction to Families, Genera and Species by Sia and Emil Morhardt is an easy-to-use guide to the most visible
families of California desert flowers and includes family and genus keys, and
color photographs of nearly 300 species. Hear the story of their project and
see beautiful slides of wildflowers included in the book. Books will be
available for purchase and signing just in time for the desert wildflower

beginning and/or intermediate field botany. Emphasis will be on review and
practice of plants learned in previous classes as well as examination and
identification of a new set of plant taxa. This class may include a short
field trip to a local botany hot spot. Instructor: Lorrae Fuentes,

Limit: 15 participants Geology in the City: Beverly Hills Oil
and Finding Faults in Hollywood - Code: W05NAT101 Join us for an exciting lecture that explores both old and
new evidence of faulting and folding geology from Monrovia to Pasadena to
Griffith Park to Hollywood and Santa Monica. Learn about the formation of the
hills in the greater Los Angeles basin, and discover if these formations are
due to geologic events of the distant past, or do recent earthquakes provide
evidence that the region is still being deformed. Also learn if there is any
connection between earthquakes, crystal deformation and oil fields in the Los

overview of the Kingdom Fungi, with emphasis on mushroom identification.
Learn the basic characteristics used to identify Southern California’s

12 participants Hooray for Hollywood and Its Faults and
Folds: A Geology
Field Trip to Tinsel Town - Code: W05NAT102 This trip will take us to the heart of Hollywood to follow
the surface evidence of the Raymond-Hollywood-Santa Monica thrust fault
system. We will visit important geologic sites in Arcadia, San Marino, and
Hollywood, including what was once Ozzie and Harriet Nelson’s home seen in
their 1950s TV series! Visits to several of the once highly productive oil
fields in the heart of metropolitan Los Angeles also will be included. Along
the way you will see evidence of structural damage from the Northridge earthquake,
and learn how oil wells can be concealed so well that local residents often
