Manzanitas (Arctostaphylos spp.) identify key characteristics that distinguish the many Southern California manzanita species from examine fresh plant material and herbarium specimens, and see the many manzanita species that are displayed in the Garden’s collection. Emphasis will be on review and practice of plants learned in previous classes as well as examination and identification of a new set of plant taxa. Geology in the City: Beverly Hills Oil and Finding Faults in Hollywood - Code: W05NAT101

Join us for an exciting lecture that explores both old and new evidence of faulting and folding geology from Monrovia to Pasadena to Griffith Park to Hollywood and Santa Monica. Learn about the formation of the hills in the greater Los Angeles basin, and discover if these formations are due to geologic events of the distant past, or do recent earthquakes provide evidence that the region is still being deformed. Also learn if there is any connection between earthquakes, crystal deformation and oil fields in the Los Angeles Basin.

Find out about fun fungi! This class will provide a basic overview of the Kingdom Fungi, with emphasis on mushroom identification. Learn the basic characteristics used to identify Southern California’s mushrooms and other fleshy fungi. Dr. Turney also takes the class into the Garden to seek out and identify the fungus among us!

Hooray for Hollywood and Its Faults and Folds: A Geology Field Trip to Tinsel Town - Code: W05NAT102

This trip will take us to the heart of Hollywood to follow the surface evidence of the Raymond-Hollywood-Santa Monica thrust fault system. We will visit important geologic sites in Arcadia, San Marino, and Hollywood, including what was once Ozzie and Harriet Nelson’s home seen in their 1950s TV series! Visits to several of the once highly productive oil fields in the heart of metropolitan Los Angeles also will be included. Along the way you will see evidence of structural damage from the Northridge earthquake, and learn how oil wells can be concealed so well that local residents often are unaware of their presence. Transportation provided and included in fee.
