School Gardens for Learning Plant Identification

From Lorrae Fuentes, RSB Chapter Program Chair

Gate program teachers Eric Sorenson and Kathy Wesley, from Valley Vista School in Rancho Cucamonga visited RSABG and wanted to find out more about the native plants at their school.  They are working with about fifteen 3rd & 4th graders, and wanted help teaching them plant ID.  They admitted they would need some instruction themselves first. Lorrae visited the school and gave them some resources for teaching about plants and learning about plant identification.

Eventually the teachers would like to ID the plants in one area of the school campus and use that "garden" as a teaching tool.  I mentioned the CNPS School Garden Program and also gave them a copy of the Native Plants for Southern California School Gardens as a gift from our chapter of CNPS.

We will be invited back in the fall to help them select and plant more natives in their garden.

The RSB Chapter Board Officers have planned to contribute to the Lymphoma Research Foundation of America in memory of Tanya Egan.
