September Meeting: The Importance of Population Genetics in Conservation

Join us for this joint meeting of the Riverside/San Bernardino and Mojave Chapters. 

Dr. Elizabeth Friar of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic, will discuss the importance of population genetics in conservation. Her doctoral research focused on genetic variability and evolution in the woody bamboos (Bambusoideae: Poaceae.) Her current research involves examining the effects of rapid change in population size and structure on genetic variation in several species in the Hawaiian silversword alliance (Asteraceae). DIRECTIONS TO BLACK ROCK NATURE CENTER:  From Highway 10 near Palm Springs, take Highway 62 north toward Joshua Tree National Park. In Yucca Valley, turn right on Joshua Lane. Follow Joshua Lane south; it makes a 90° jog to the left (east) and then turns back to the south (right). Continue south on Joshua Lane until you see the Black Rock Canyon Nature Center on the left. October Meeting: Fire safe Landscaping and Plant Sale Previews 
Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005. - 7 to 9 pm.

Plant Sale Preview before the Program. Lists and short discussion of plants that will be available at the Nov. 5 & 6 RSABG Plant Sale and the Nov. 13 CNPS Chapter Plant Sale.

Program: Learn how to plan and maintain a defensible space and landscape around your home and provide a better buffer against wildfires. Learn how to prune and clear fire prone vegetation, select and plant fire resistant plants, properly space plantings, and maintain the landscape.

Program: Start now to round up your trip notes and photos, plan your best cookies, come plan 2006! Including the New Year’s Day hike! Exotic vacation full of native plant discoveries? Backyard success with a native plant garden? Great photos of past chapter field trip wonders? Bring 6 to 12 slides or so to share. We will also brainstorm ideas for future programs, field trips, and chapter activities. We need your input (and your cookies!) so don’t miss it.

Directions to RCRCD: 
From the 91 Fwy, exit to downtown Riverside at 14th St. Proceed west on 14th (toward Mt Rubidoux,) and continue through Evergreen Cemetery. Turn left onto Glenwood Dr, then left into the second gate to the parking lot. Follow the curved drive and park close to the green-house structure, behind Building E and adjacent to the native plant nursery (shade house). You can park where ever you find an opening, or park in the usual parking lot and walk down the lane between the new office and the garages, as if you were going toward the end of the 2 large greenhouses. You will see the shade house and buildings behind the greenhouses. Walk up the ramp to the meeting room.).
