President’s Message Plant Sale Success! Our second annual plant
sale at the Riverside Municipal Museum on November 13 was a great success.
With lots of activity in downtown Riverside, our colorful display of
beautiful native plants attracted a lot of attention. Garden enthusiasts were
treated to a wonderful array of plants and the exceptional knowledge of some
of our chapter board members who provided helpful suggestions on growing
natives. We raised approximately $900 for chapter education and
conservation efforts. Special thanks to our volunteers, especially Susan
Jett, Michael Duval, and Lorrae Fuentes, Chris Briggs, Alison Shilling,
Sheila McMahon, and Arlee Montalvo. We are already planning for next year so
if you want to get involved, let us know. Get Involved in Our Community! One of the best ways to get to know others who are interested in native
plants – conserving them, growing them, studying them – is to participate in
one of our community outreach activities. This time of year there are many
opportunities for outreach at venues throughout the Riverside/San Bernardino
area. One such opportunity is the Valley View High School’s Environmental
Fair in Moreno Valley, CA on Thursday, March 16, 2006. In addition to the fair, students in the school’s Environmental
Conservation Organization are working on developing a garden for use by classes throughout the curriculum which features plants from
local habitats. If you can help with the garden project or at a CNPS booth on
March 16 at the Environmental Fair, please contact me asap, Katie Barrows (760) 564-2413, or at kate.cnb@verizon.net) CNPS
accomplishes tremendous things on behalf of our native plants and wild
places. Whether promoting education and appreciation of growing native plants
through horticultural programs such as school gardens, or ensuring protection
of native plant habitats and natural open spaces, CNPS has a record of
success. This success comes through the support of members, as contributors
and as volunteers. As of January 1, 2006, CNPS membership will increase to
keep pace with the rising cost of doing business. We hope you will continue
to support the efficient and effective efforts of CNPS through your
membership dues and contributions. From Katie Barrows |
